kalpitya lagoon kite surfing lanka

Kalpitiya is renowned as Sri Lanka’s top kite surfing destination, offering excellent conditions for enthusiasts year-round. The lagoon is ideal for both beginners and advanced surfers, with steadier winds during the winter and more variable gusts from May to October due to changing wind directions.

Winds from the ocean during the winter months ensure stability, making it a prime season for kiting. Despite the seasonal differences, Kalpitiya provides consistently great kitesurfing experiences.

The area is also perfect for beginners, thanks to its numerous kitesurfing schools and easy-to-arrange lessons. While kiting in Kalpitiya’s lagoon, wearing water shoes is advised to protect against sea shells, especially for beginners. This simple precaution helps avoid potential injuries, ensuring a safer and more enjoyable experience.

ippantivu island kite surfing lanka

Ippantivu Island, known as “Mini Vella,” offers a serene and relatively undiscovered kitesurfing experience in Sri Lanka.

Situated in Puttalam Lagoon, just a 30-minute boat ride from Kalpitiya, this hidden gem provides tranquility with fewer crowds and pristine conditions.

Although smaller than Vella Island, Ippantivu is favored during the summer for its stronger winds due to the venturi effect between the island and Dutch Bay. This phenomenon makes Ippantivu particularly windy, especially in the choppy channel areas, offering an exhilarating experience for kite surfers. Ideal for those seeking a challenging and less crowded kite spot, Ippantivu’s strong winds make it perfect for more experienced surfers. The best time to visit is during the summer when the venturi effect is most pronounced.

The spot is famous for its strong and consistent offshore winds, particularly during the summer, making it more suited for intermediate and advanced kite surfers.
